Saudi-led Coalition Advances To Capture al-Brah Region In Western Yemen

On May 3, the Saudi-led coalition and its proxies launched a military operation to capture the al-Brah region in the northwestern part of the southwestern Yemeni province of Taiz, according to the UAE-based al-Arabiya TV.

Yemeni sources said that the coalition had captured the areas of al-Tilal al-Swad, al-Khazan al-Abiyad, al-Shabakah and al-Central around al-Brah during the first hours of the operation.

Al-Arabiya reported that several units of the Yemeni Army Republican Guard led by Brigadier General Tariq Mohammed Saleh are talking part in the new military operation. Brig. Gen. Tariq is the cousin of former Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh who was killed by the Houthis on December 4, 2017.

The al-Brah region is considered highly strategic as it leads to the northwestern entrance of the city of Taiz, that’s besieged by the Houthis. The region also overlooks the main highway of the western Yemeni coast that reaches the al-Hudaydah port, a main mid-term target of the Saudi-led coalition.

Observers believe that the mountainous terrain of the al-Brah region will give the Houthis an advantage over the Saudi-led coalition, that failed to capture several similar regions before.
